Vaccination Programs

VACCINATION PROGRAMS

At Creature Comforts Veterinary Center, most of our vaccines are the Boehringer Ingelheim brand of vaccines for dogs and cats. On the canine side, we use the Recombitek line which includes distemper, hepatitis (adenovirus type 2), leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvo, and bordetella. Our rabies vaccines are from their Imrab series. For our cat patients we use the PureVax line of vaccines. This includes rhinotracheitis, calici, panleukopenia, chlamydia, leukemia, and rabies. The vaccines from Boehringer Ingelheim are non-adjuvanted and have a lower risk of vaccine reactions for your pet.

Our bivalent flu vaccine is from Merck, as Boehringer Ingelheim does not manufacture a flu vaccine.

We tailor your pet's vaccine program to you and your pet's lifestyle. We do not believe in over vaccinating, but at the same time, it is necessary for your pet to have full coverage.

Ideally, vaccination programs are started when puppies and kittens are about 8 weeks old. There is the initial vaccination, plus 2 boosters approximately 1 month apart. A 1-year rabies vaccine is given on the 3rd vaccine visit. In short, we prefer to vaccinate at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks. After completing the 3rd visit, your pet will be fully vaccinated for one year.

For adult dogs and cats with no vaccination history, we recommend an initial vaccine and a booster 4 weeks later. A 1-year rabies will be given to pets without vaccination histories.

Across the board, we recommend every dog be vaccinated for distemper, hepatitis (adenovirus type 2), parainfluenza, parvo, bordetella, and rabies. After learning more about you and your dog, the doctors may recommend additional vaccines to keep your dog healthy.

After receiving a 1-year rabies as their initial rabies vaccine, adult dogs will be given a 3-year rabies thereafter.

For our feline patients, we recommend the combination vaccine of rhinotracheitis, calici, panleukopenia, and chlamydia, along with rabies. Once again, after learning more about you and your cat, the doctors may recommend additional vaccines.

Knowledge is power and knowing the importance of a regular vaccine program is vital to your pet's well-being. Vaccinating your pets doesn't give a 100% guarantee your pet will never contract a disease it has been vaccinated against. However, the chances are drastically lower.
